Prof Pieter Gillard

Head of Clinic at the Department of Endocrinology, University Hospitals Leuven and Full Professor at the Department of Chronic and Metabolic Disease, University Leuven, KUL, Belgium. 

Pieter Gillard graduated magna cum laude as a Medical Doctor from the University of Leuven (KULeuven) in 1999. He has degrees in Internal Medicine (2006), Nephrology (2008), and Endocrinology (2010) and a PhD in Medical Sciences from KULeuven (2008). He holds the position of Head of Clinic in Endocrinology at UZLeuven, Full Professor at KULeuven and Guest Professor at VUB in Brussels. He received several awards and is recognized for his contributions to diabetes research and clinical practice, particularly in the areas of novel technologies and beta-cell transplantation. Dr. Gillard has led extensive research into innovative technologies for diabetes management, publishing over 150 papers in top-tier journals. His research has influenced clinical guidelines and practices, particularly in type 1 diabetes management. He has also collaborated with various national and international academic and research institutions, contributing to significant multicenter studies and clinical trials.

Dr. Gillard specializes in the care of people with type 1 diabetes, people with diabetes after transplantation, people undergoing beta-cell and pancreas transplantation, and people with chronic diabetic kidney disease. He oversees a multidisciplinary team at UZLeuven, managing the care of over 1600 people with type 1 diabetes, with a focus on integrating advanced technologies into clinical practice. His efforts have positioned him as a national and international expert in diabetes management. In addition to his clinical and research roles, Dr. Gillard actively engages with the diabetes community through educational initiatives and patient support programs. He co-organizes science days and information sessions for individuals with diabetes and their families.
